NDC Has Better Record Of Social Intervention Programmes – Ofosu Ampofo
The National Chairman of the largest opposition party National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Ofosu Ampofo has stated that when it comes to the issue of social intervention policies and programmes which have brought a lot of relieve to the people of Ghana, NDC governments have performed far better than the NPP.
He made this known during an interview on ‘Inside Politics’ programme on Power FM on November 18, 2019 to which he listed some of the achievements of the party.
He indicated that the nationwide rural electrification project that former President Rawlings under NDC initiated was a major social intervention programme meant to address the poverty and imbalance in the society at the time.
“If you want to address poverty in the rural areas, supplying them with electricity will create a number employment opportunities to the indigenes over there such as welders, cold store operators among others”, he said.
Access to portable drinking water
Another social intervention programme he made mention under the achievement of the party was the establishment of Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA) which addressed the issue of lack of portable drinking water in the rural areas through the expansion of water supply across the country.
“We also started the small water system projects. Through this, we almost eradicated the guinea worm menace in the country. So for once, people in the rural areas started getting access to good drinking water.”
In the area of education, the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) which the NDC introduced has come to address a number of challenges that the educational sector was facing such as the issue of schools under trees among the rest, he added.
The Chairman continued by emphasizing that apart from our first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah who established the Tema Township Housing project and General Acheampong’s Dansoman Housing Project, the NDC has created a number of Housing projects which include the Adenta, Sakumono Township, Koforidua social housing, Tamale social housing, Sunyani, Elmina.
“The recent one that we established was the Sagleme housing project which is now idle”, he bemoaned.
“When you address the health needs of the people, it is better than any other thing”, he stressed, "they brought into existence regional and district hospitals, nursing and midwifery training schools, Community – Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS)."
